While both players have an impressive Stanley Cup pedigree and individual hardware, there are valid concerns about their age and the mileage they've accumulated. Andersen, 31, and Bobrovsky, 37, are both in their late thirties, a time when goaltenders often face increased injury risk and performance degradation. However, both teams have wisely insulated their goaltending depth charts, allowing for strategic rest and workload management. Andersen is expected to rotate minutes with Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi, while the Maple Leafs have options like Anthony Stolarz and Artur Akthyamov. Statistically, late-thirties goalies have a somewhat high floor but limited ceiling, with outperformance being exceptionally hard to find. The data suggests that while these veteran goalies can still contribute, their ability to outright steal games may be a thing of the past. The most encouraging aspect of these signings is the strategic workload management, which allows coaches to avoid back-to-back games and rest older goalies during stretches of the schedule. This is particularly important for Andersen, who has a significant injury history. In my opinion, both bets by the front offices are reasonable, as Andersen and Bobrovsky bolster the goaltending depth charts and are dream options for playoff time. However, fans should be realistic about what these goalies can contribute at this point in their careers. History tells us that veteran goaltenders still have a place in the league, but their ability to outright steal games may be no longer. The real question is whether these goalies can maintain their form and contribute to their teams' success in the long run.
